Helping Kids Make Choices

We make choices all day long. Let’s help kids identify times during the day when they make choices and practice giving reasons why they made certain choices.

Objectives

  • Recognize that we all make many choices each day.
  • Describe being fit as making choices that are good for the body and brain.

Lesson Plan

First and foremost, fit is about choices. Each day a child, no matter their age, makes many choices that impact their health and well-being. The lessons in this unit build awareness of the many moments each day when they can make a choice, then empowers them to make the best choice—the fit choice!

Set The Stage

Act out making a simple choice (e.g., hold up a red and a blue marker, say, “Hmm,” and then draw with the blue one). Ask students to describe what you did (you made a choice!) and brainstorm possible reasons for your choice (e.g., you like blue; it’s dark and easier to see; the other one was dried up; etc.). Summarize your choice in a complete sentence: “I chose [the blue marker] because _______.”

Captivate

Times We Make Choices

Engage your learners by asking them about the choices they make each day. Draw learners’ attention to the first slide. Ask them to think about what they choose to wear, eat, and do throughout their day. Have fun this by asking silly questions that inspire silly answers!

Educate

Reasons We Make Choices

Ask students to describe some of the choices they've made. Explain that with fit, you all will be talking a lot about choices, especially healthy choices.

Activate

Sharing the Choices We make

Students share with a partner three choices they will make after school today. Invite them to make an “I will” statement about the choices they will make after school.

Option: Download the My Choices printable for students to record their “I will” statements.

Close the Lesson

Ask students to share their plans with a partner. Highlight positive and healthy choices they make during the school day. Get students ready to think about making choices that are good for their body and brain.
