Lesson
Making healthy choices happens throughout our day. Teach kids to recognize these moments.
Being fit is not just about what you eat or drink or how you move. Being fit is about having enough energy and motivation to make healthy nutrition and physical activity choices. Four key factors of well-being help you to be fit:
The lessons in this unit help students connect the four parts of fit with everyday choices by teaching them how to do a choice-check. A choice-check is a tool for the moments when a child needs to make a choice. Your students will learn to be mindful and stop to think about their energy and mood before making a choice—then decide the best choice, the fit choice! Print and display the fit Wellness Posters to help them be mindful of healthy choices they can make throughout the day.
Have kids turn to a partner and discuss what doing a choice-check means to them.

Have Kids Think About Healthy Choices
Read slides aloud. If the slide describes a time and place that a student has done a choice-check, they are to stand. If not, they stay seated.
Explain that all of slides show times and places when children make food, move, or recharge choices, so they are all times and places for a choice-check!
Teach Kids to Make Healthy Choices
Ask students to talk about times in their day when they make food choices. What about move and recharge choices? Anytime students make a recharge, food, or move choice is a great time for them to do a choice-check and make a healthy choice.
Check for understanding: When will you choose to do a choice-check?
How to Remind Kids to Make Healthy Choices
Students create a poster using the fit-Check Poster to show the times and places they can do a fit-check.
We have learned that our energy (recharge) and mood influence all kinds of choices. We have also learned how we can do a choice-check to get ready to make a healthy choice. How will you use your poster to encourage others to do a choice-check too?
