Lesson

What is a fit-Check?

Taking time to think about choices is important, we call this a fit-check.

Objectives

  • Describe "fit-check" as checking recharge and mood before making a choice.

Info to Know

Being fit is not just about what you eat or drink or how you move. Being fit is about having enough energy and motivation to make healthy nutrition and physical activity choices. Four key factors of well-being help you to be fit:

  • Mood: Motivate Your Mood
  • Food: Think Your Food
  • Recharge: Recharge Your Energy
  • Move: Move Your Body

The lessons in this unit help students connect the four parts of fit with everyday choices by teaching them how to do a fit-check. A fit-check is a tool for the moments when a child needs to make a choice. Your students will learn to be mindful and stop to think about their energy and mood before making a choice—then decide the best choice, the fit choice! Print and display the fit Wellness Posters to help them be mindful of healthy choices they can make throughout the day.

Set The Stage

After a long day at school, how do you recharge your energy? What do you choose for a nutritious snack? What do you do for physical activity?

Captivate

Difference Between Choices

Read through Mia and Isaac's choices on the slideshow. Mia does not take the time to do a fit-check and makes an unhealthy choice. Isaac, however, does a fit-check and thinks about how his mood and recharge influence his choices.

Educate

Choices Help us Recharge Energy

Discuss Mia's choice not to do a fit-check and Isaac's decision to do a fit-check. Guide discussion so students understand that Isaac's choices of eating a nutritious snack and relaxing by playing a card game helped him recharge his energy.

Check for understanding: What can you do to help yourself make a healthy choice?

Activate

fit-Checks Help Our Mood

Students plan to do a fit-check when they get home from school.

Remind your students to think about recharge and mood before making a choice by asking themselves "How much energy do I have?" and "What's my mood?"
