What’s on My Mind – A Teen’s Guide to Thinking, Feeling, and Figuring Things Out: Stigma

Overcoming stigma is not easy, but teens’ feelings are valid and they deserve support. Teens will learn about stigma, dispel some common myths about mental health, and discover some helpful coping strategies.

Grades Teen

Feelings of embarrassment, fear, or shame can prevent teens from sharing what they are going through or asking for help. The Stigma chapter of What’s on My Mind: A Teen’s Guide to Thinking, Feeling, and Figuring Things Out helps teens understand mental health stigma and develop tools to challenge it.

This chapter explains what stigma is, where it comes from, and how it can influence self-perception. Through guided reflection and practical coping strategies, teens are encouraged to challenge common myths about mental health and reconnect with their own sense of worth.

In this chapter, teens will explore:

  • The meaning of mental health stigma and how it shows up
  • Common misconceptions and labels surrounding mental illness
  • Strategies for coping with judgment or negative perceptions
  • Reflective journaling prompts to process personal experiences
  • Positive self-talk exercises that reinforce self-respect and identity

What’s on My Mind offers structure and guidance without being overwhelming, creating space for honest reflection and emotional growth. This chapter supports building confidence, self-awareness, and the understanding that mental health is an essential part of overall well-being.

Download the Stigma chapter to explore tools that help challenge shame, strengthen self-compassion, and encourage seeking support when it is needed.
